Fund X
A tailored gender-inclusion program for a development fund aiming to maximise its impact in gender-equality and poverty reduction for sustainable growth in Nepal’s emerging start-up market.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The brief was to design a gender-focused inclusion program for a Nepal-based fund to impact not only the internal practices of the organisation but to create an impact for the fund’s portfolio companies. The fund is already committed to gender lens investing but wanted new ways to expand their positive impact.
The team conducted extensive research into the Nepalese cultural context as it relates to gender equality as well as other forms of exclusion that are prevalent in Nepal in order to develop a program that could address intersectional gender issues to best serve local audiences. This was a vital step in order to achieve desired outcomes with empathy and sensitivity.
WHAT WE DELIVERED: PART 1
We started looking at the fund’s internal workflows and practices, working with their team to help them develop their own goals and resolve individual barriers to success. We then looked at providing them with a foundational understanding of conformity and exclusion, unpacking how these manifest day-to-day how they might be resolved. Here the team developed their own proposals for improving the organisations’ practices to improve accessibility. The ideas ranged from more accessible and inclusive office facilities and flexible working options to meeting structure to encourage collaboration.
Employees who feel accepted and appreciated for who they are, including race, gender, ethnicity etc. are happier and…

WHAT WE DELIVERED: PART 2
This consisted of an inclusive innovation workshop, building on the knowledge and skills gained in Part 1, we delivered a highly interactive program that we designed to help the team create more inclusive externally focused processes and practices. Here, the team utilised Design Thinking tools to ideate solutions for reaching different groups in Nepal, specifically addressing barriers to work for women and rural Nepalis for whom access to technology, transport and education can be limited. The ideas are fleshed out throughout the process and participants were able to get into the knuts and bolts of how their ideas could work to transform them into implementable solutions. Outcomes included initiatives adapted to Nepal’s specific challenges for women & girls’ access to transport, internship programs to help resolve language barriers for rural Nepalis and more...
WHAT WE DELIVERED: PART 3
Finally, we added a mentorship element to the workshop, where we created a framework for how the fund could address these same issues with their portfolio companies, helping them to implement change on a wider scale.
